I enjoy doing author visits, book festivals as well as library and community day appearances. I would love the opportunity to present a program for your preschool, or K-2 students. Using my books and published poems, I offer interactive programs that excite children about reading and writing. Together we explore how writers play with language to create the best story possible.
Since I have returned to teaching, I am only available for evenings, weekends or during the summer.
My presentations range from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the age and type of actitivies.
One popular program is a 'Meet the Author Pajama Party.' Children (wearing pajamas, of course!) come back to school in the evening with their favorite stuffed animal. I read HOW WILL I EVERY SLEEP IN THIS BED? and/or HUGGLE WUGGLE, BEDTIME SNUGGLE and STAR OF THE SHOW. Usually the Parents Organization will provide a snack (animal crackers and milk.) I'll do a brief Q&A and discuss the writing process. We end with fingerplays and bedtime-themed activities and songs. The program lasts about 35 minutes and is ideal for ages 3 to 7. All family members welcome.
Another popular program is 'Beep! Beep! It's Story Time.'
This is the same program as above PLUS I read my new book, BEEP! BEEP! SPECIAL DELIVERY and do songs and finger plays relating to trucks and transportation. Children learn about the behind the scenes
process of writing a rhyming book. The program lasts 45 minutes to an hour.

My friend and fellow writer, Karen Kaufman Orloff, and I have partnered together to offer writing classes for adults. We call our 5-week program, The ABC's of Writing for Children. We cover where authors get their ideas and how to turn these ideas into poems, short stories, picture books or longer works. We discuss how to structure your writing to include the elements of story and how to submit your work to publishers. Occasionally we present shorter, introductory workshops at the local library. Contact me or Karen Orloff for more information. Visit Karen's website for a look at her terrific books.
If you're interested in learning more about writing children's books, check out our organization, Children's Writers of the Hudson Valley and consider attending one of our hands-on events in the Poughkeepsie, NY area. Click the button for more information on our upcoming conference:
